STEVE COWLEY –
Swampy Cree
A NYC resident
since 1993, Steve was born in Manitoba
in Northern
Canada. With
a Fine Arts degree from the University of Regina, Saskatchewan (in
1988) Steve has been an art teacher, news reporter, freelance
writer, scriptwriter and production assistant on television
commercials and music videos.
After receiving a
New York Film Academy certificate in 1998, Steve joined the staff at
the American Indian Community House's (AICH,
in NYC) Performing Arts Division as an assistant. He handled
non-traditional casting for the agency and cast Native American
artists for theater, film, video, television roles and modeling
jobs. He served as a theatrical technical assistant at AICH's annual
theatrical and music festival, Indian Summer in addition to being an
assistant lighting designer on a number of theatrical and musical
assignments.
As an artist Steve
designs postcards, publicity print work and print advertisements. He
has also written several articles for the AICH Newsletter, published
several film and art gallery opening reviews in addition to being a
Tâpwê producer/director and Tapwe.com's computer graphics
artist/designer.
In Steve’s last
position at AICH as a WIA job developer and employment counselor, he
was honored with the Dept. of Labor's 2002 Alice Bigpond Roach
Memorial Award for outstanding community service and commitment to
the Native American community.
Steve now directs
his full attention and creative talents as Chief Executive Officer
and Producer/director at Tâpwê Production Projects.
